The Swiss Army Knife of Overdrives Foxcatcher Evolved

The Swiss Army Knife of Overdrives Foxcatcher Evolved

At FX Pedal Planet Online Store, we’re always excited to see a much loved pedal evolve, especially when its original version earned a devoted following among players worldwide. We caught up with Alex at CopperSound Pedals to discuss the newly redesigned Foxcatcher V2, its expanded capabilities, and the philosophy that guided its development.

The original Foxcatcher became a much loved overdrive. What motivated you to revisit and redesign it for Version 2?

We received a great deal of feedback and enquiries from players looking for the overdrive side of the V1 as a standalone unit. So, when we began working on V2, we wanted to keep everything that made V1 great, while also expanding on it in ways not often seen in the Bluesbreaker market.

What were the key goals or improvements you wanted to achieve with the Foxcatcher V2 compared to the original?

As well as creating a standalone unit, the most common request was for more available gain. So we did exactly that, and in a way that I don’t believe has been done with that circuit before. We also wanted to incorporate our new switching system, Smart Bypass. This allows the user to access both latching (single press and release) and momentary (press and hold) operation.

Can you tell us more about the new gain and shape toggles, how do these features expand the pedal’s tonal range?

The new Gain toggle allows the player to take the beloved Foxcatcher circuit to higher levels of gain with added sustain. The Shape toggle enables the player to tailor the low end content, something V1 had no way of doing.

The V2 has a smaller footprint. Was that purely a practical design choice, or did it also influence the internal layout and sound?

With players wanting a standalone overdrive, we set out to explore the world of the top loaded 125B enclosure. I had the layout in mind for a while. We knew we wanted a large knob for the main control, but I also wanted to incorporate two toggle switches that would be tucked away and unable to be easily stepped on. We’re really happy with the layout of our new Solo Series.

How would you describe the overall tonal character of the Foxcatcher V2 — does it stay true to the V1 or take things in a new direction?

Both! It was important for us to keep what players loved about V1 while also expanding upon it.

What kind of players or musical styles do you think will benefit most from the updates in V2?

Players in the rock world, especially those who appreciate clear note articulation.

The original Foxcatcher had a strong following. How did you approach refining a pedal that already had such a dedicated fanbase?

By staying true to the original and expanding upon it, not reinventing it.

Can you share a bit about the testing and prototyping process — were there any unexpected discoveries during development?

Once the breadboarding is complete and we transition into a prototype with a working PCB, we test internally with employees, close friends, and local industry pals. We also send some units home with employees to try in their own rigs and studio set ups. From there, we gather critical feedback and assess the next steps. Our biggest discovery was how favourable it was to all of us right out of the gate. We only needed to make minor tweaks.

With the Foxcatcher V1 discontinued, what do you hope players will appreciate most when they transition to V2?

We hope they appreciate that the classic tones are still present, but we also hope they explore the new, higher gain side of the Foxcatcher. With the addition of Smart Bypass, we’d love to see players use it creatively and possibly approach things differently.

Finally, what does the Foxcatcher’s evolution say about CopperSound Pedals’ direction and philosophy moving forward?

We want to continue offering creative products that maintain a core principle of keeping an approachable user interface that leads to an enjoyable experience for the player. This product philosophy works beautifully for both studio and live environments.

Thank you to CopperSound Pedals for sharing their insights with us. We’re thrilled to showcase the Foxcatcher V2 at FX Pedal Planet Online Store and can’t wait for players to experience its evolution first hand.
