Description

The CopperSound Pedals ION is a compact PLL-style laser fuzz designed to deliver dramatic frequency sweeps and synth-like textures while remaining practical and musically usable in a real guitar rig. Unlike many traditional phase-locked loop fuzz designs that can become unpredictable or difficult to control in a mix, ION is engineered to keep the effect recognisable and expressive. It provides a focused yet adventurous fuzz voice suited to experimental rock, alternative, modern indie, heavy textures and ambient sound design, while still working naturally with standard guitars, basses and amplifiers.

Tonally, ION produces searing harmonic sweeps, resonant “laser” bursts and aggressive fuzz textures that react strongly to playing dynamics. Heavy pick attack and pick scrapes can trigger dramatic resonant peaks that surge above the signal, creating the distinctive laser-like tones the pedal is known for. At the same time, the circuit retains musical structure, ensuring the effect enhances riffs and leads rather than overwhelming them. The result is a fuzz that can move from synth-inspired textures to gritty octave tones while remaining articulate within a band mix.

The playing feel is highly responsive and immediate. Hyper-accurate tracking allows the pedal to respond quickly to picking dynamics, encouraging expressive playing techniques such as palm-muted riffs, scraping strings and aggressive attack. This responsiveness keeps the pedal engaging and inspirational without requiring constant adjustment, making it easy to move from idea to idea during writing or recording sessions.

Control is intentionally straightforward to maintain a fast and intuitive workflow. A single FUZZ control adjusts the overall output level of the effect, while the three-position MODE toggle changes the behaviour of the optical filter network within the circuit. In the upper position, the filter produces high-frequency resonance with maximum sensitivity, generating bright and energetic sweeps. The middle setting balances the response for dynamic tracking and energetic movement that follows picking intensity. The lower position emphasises a sub-octave square wave texture, producing a thicker fuzz tone where the raw octave-down character becomes more prominent.

At the heart of ION is a PLL-based fuzz circuit combined with a sophisticated optical filter network. This design shapes the behaviour of the harmonic sweeps so they remain recognisable and musical rather than chaotic. The circuit maintains consistent tracking and strong response across a wide range of playing styles while keeping the characteristic “space laser” effect under control.

The pedal is housed in a compact all-metal enclosure designed for reliable pedalboard use. Its reflective powder coat finish features a distinctive rainbow splatter aesthetic that references the spectral behaviour of the circuit. Because of the finishing process, each pedal has a slightly unique appearance, giving it a visually distinctive identity on a pedalboard.

Clear LED status indication allows players to confirm at a glance whether the effect is engaged, which is especially useful on darker stages. Mechanical true bypass switching ensures the guitar signal remains unaffected when the pedal is switched off, preserving the natural tone of the instrument and amplifier.

Input and output jacks are positioned on the sides of the enclosure with the input on the right and the output on the left, supporting conventional pedalboard signal flow and making cable routing straightforward. The standard centre-negative 9V DC input is located for easy access when integrating the pedal with common isolated pedalboard power supplies.

Backed by the manufacturer’s warranty, the CopperSound Pedals ION offers a distinctive and creative fuzz voice in a compact format. By combining the character of classic PLL fuzz circuits with a carefully controlled filter design and simplified controls, it delivers dramatic synth-like tones that remain musical, responsive and easy to integrate into modern pedalboards.

Controls

  • FUZZ: Adjusts overall output level of the fuzz and balances effect level with bypassed signal
  • MODE: Three-position filter response control shaping brightness, dynamics and octave behaviour
