Description
I conceived of an instrument that would create sound without using any mechanical energy, like the conductor of an orchestra. The orchestra plays mechanically, using mechanical energy; the conductor just moves their hands, and their movements have an effect on the music artistry. Leon Theremin
The Theremin is an electronic musical instrument, which is controlled without physical contact. The Theremin consisted of two metal antennas, which is sensitive and reacts to proximity of the performer.
Thereminists place one hand close to the antennas, which control oscillators for frequency and the other hand for volume. Artists who have utilised the Theremin include.
Jimmy Page, Whole Lotta Love and No Quarter
The Beach Boys, Good Vibrations
Rolling Stones, Between The Buttons and Their Sanatnic Majesties Request.
The Electro-Faustus EF202 Theremorph is a powerhouse synth engine with theremin-esque optical control. The Electro-Faustus EF202 Theremorph full featured synth is packed with a DCO (digitally controlled oscillator) with analogue wave shaping, low pass filter, envelope and LFO.
Do you dream of endless morphing power? Control the Electro-Faustus Theremorph with MIDI or analog CV/Gate signals, alternatively, use it as a controller with both MIDI and analogue outputs.
The future of MORPH is here and now!
PLEASE NOTE:
The Electro-Faustus Theremorph is designed for 9VDC centre positive power. Electro-Faustus supply a USA compatible style power supply for this purpose. Please use a compatible proprietary adapter for your location. The power adapter supplied with the Electro-Faustus Theremorph should not be used with other Electro-Faustus noise devices.
Alternatively, included is a 1SPOT reverse polarity converter.
Please ensure the Electro-Faustus Theremorph is powered correctly to prevent damage. If unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Controls
PITCH/CONTROL: Switch between the sensor controlling the pitch of the instrument or only sending a MIDI message. The message sent is configurable via a web page and updated via a MIDI cable. The message can be notes, pitch bend, mod wheel, CC or NRPN.
WAVEFORM: Adjust the waveform of the oscillator between square wave, triangle wave or sawtooth
PULSE WIDTH: The pulse width of the square wave. This has no effect on the other waveforms
VOLUME: The audio output level
OSC FREQ: The minimum frequency of the oscillator. Adjusted in whole note steps and has no effect on notes received via MIDI
SENSOR RANGE: The number of octaves, from one to eight, for the sensor. Turning the knob clockwise, the pitch is higher when your hand is high above the sensor. To the left, the sensor behaviour is inverted. That is, the pitch is higher when your hand is lower over the sensor.
VCF CUTOFF: Cut off frequency of the low pass filter
VCF RES: Resonance of the filter, which increases to self oscillation
LFO SHAPE: The shape of the LFO (low frequency oscillator) waveform. Continuously variable from ramp to the left, triangle centre and sawtooth to the right
LFO RATE: Speed of the low frequency oscillator
LFO-FILTER MOD AMOUNT: The amount of LFO applied to the filter cut off. Zero modulation is on the left and maximum is to the right
LFO PITCH MOD AMOUNT: The amount of LFO applied to the pitch. Zero modulation is to the left and maximum is to the right
ENV-FILTER MOD AMOUNT: The amount of envelope filter voltage applied to the filter cut off. Zero modulation is in the centre, to the right modulation follows the envelope up and down, the same way that it affects volume. To the left, modulation is reversed and goes down and then up.
ENV-PITCH MOD AMOUNT: The amount of envelope voltage applied to the oscillator pitch. Zero modulation is in the centre, to the right and modulation follows the envelope up and down, the same way that affects the volume. To the left, modulation is reversed and goes down then up.
ATTACK: The amount of time it takes the envelope to reach its peak level once a note is triggered. The envelope is applied to the VCA (voltage controlled amplifier), and optionally to the filter and/or oscillator.
RELEASE: The amount of time it takes the envelope to return to zero from its peak level once a note has ended.
Filter Useage Notes
If the filter cut off is all the way down, and there is no filter modulation, then you will not hear anything.
If the envelope filter modulation is all the way up, then turning the filter cut off knob while a sound is playing will appear to have no effect. This is because the envelope is at its maximum while the sound is playing.
