Description

The OKKO FX Dynamist is a dual-channel analogue FET overdrive for guitarists and bass players who want a clear, responsive drive sound without losing the character of their instrument or amplifier. Developed from the established circuit platform behind the OKKO Diablo, it retains the same dynamic, amp-like foundation while introducing a cleaner, more understated appearance. Its two independently adjustable channels make it suitable for use as a clean boost, an edge-of-break-up drive, a main overdrive or a pair of complementary rhythm and lead sounds. This flexibility allows it to cover blues, country, indie, classic rock, alternative music and other styles where touch response, note separation and controlled gain are important.

The Dynamist has a clear, open voice with a firm low end, defined mids and a strong but natural attack. Rather than covering the instrument with a fixed distortion character, it retains the differences between pickups, playing positions and amplifier settings. Chords remain articulate, individual notes stay easy to distinguish, and fuller neck pickups can be used without the bass becoming loose or cloudy. It is particularly effective with a clean amplifier, where it can provide the response and tonal depth of an additional driven channel while preserving the amplifier’s underlying character.

Its playing feel is one of its most distinctive qualities. The circuit responds closely to picking strength, finger attack and changes from the instrument’s volume control. Softer playing produces cleaner, more restrained sounds, while a firmer attack brings out additional drive, harmonic content and punch. The adjustable operating voltage allows the response to be made softer and more compressed or tighter and more immediate, helping the pedal adapt to different instruments, amplifiers and playing techniques. This responsiveness makes it intuitive to control from the instrument and encourages expressive playing without forcing every note into the same level of compression.

Each channel has its own Gain and Level controls, allowing two different combinations of drive and output volume to be stored within the pedal. One channel can be set for a light boost or rhythm sound while the other provides more gain or a deliberate volume lift. The selected channel can be changed while the effect is active, or prepared in advance while the pedal is bypassed, reducing the need to adjust controls during a performance.

The shared control section provides detailed adjustment of both tone and physical response. Volt changes the internal operating voltage from approximately 6 to 18 volts. Lower settings introduce earlier break-up, greater compression and a softer, thicker response, while higher settings increase headroom for tighter bass, clearer transients and more punch. Feed controls the amount of low-frequency content entering the gain stage, helping powerful humbuckers, neck pickups and bass instruments remain controlled and transparent. Body adds bass and low mids while also changing the structure of the overdrive, allowing the sound to move from lean and focused to thicker and fuller.

The Tone control adjusts treble and upper-mid content, while the three-position Mids switch changes the frequency range affected by the tone circuit. This makes it easier to match the Dynamist with bright, dark, scooped or mid-forward amplifiers. The three-position Input switch changes the sensitivity and response of the first gain stage. Normal mode provides the familiar core response, low-gain mode is suited to cleaner and edge-of-break-up sounds, and top-boost mode adds a more pronounced attack and greater chord definition. An internal presence trimmer offers further adjustment of the upper frequencies when required.

The fully analogue FET circuit is designed to provide natural gain behaviour, low noise and consistent performance. Its internal voltage conversion allows the Volt control to alter headroom and compression while the pedal continues to operate from a standard 9-volt supply. High-quality components and hand-built, wired construction support dependable use in recording, rehearsal and live environments. Each OKKO pedal is assembled in Leipzig, Germany, by musicians and technicians with practical experience of stage equipment.

A robust all-metal enclosure protects the circuit, switches and controls during regular transport and use. Its compact rectangular format fits comfortably into a working pedalboard, while the spacing between the footswitches allows the effect and channel functions to be operated confidently. The white enclosure is finished with contrasting black and turquoise graphics, giving it a clean appearance while keeping control labels clear and easy to locate under changing stage lighting.

Clearly positioned LEDs provide immediate confirmation of whether the effect is active and which channel is selected. The channel indication remains useful when preparing a sound in bypass, allowing the required gain setting to be checked before the pedal is engaged.

True-bypass switching removes the effect circuit from the signal path when the Dynamist is disengaged, helping preserve the instrument’s original sound and signal integrity. The input, output and DC power connections are positioned along the top edge of the enclosure, keeping cables away from the footswitches and allowing neighbouring pedals to sit closer together.

The Dynamist is supported by a manufacturer-backed warranty, providing additional confidence in its construction and long-term reliability. Its combination of two independent channels, adjustable headroom, controlled low-frequency response and detailed EQ makes it more adaptable than a conventional overdrive while remaining straightforward to use. For guitarists and bass players who value clarity, dynamics and a close connection between their hands, instrument and amplifier, it is a practical and distinctive addition to a rig.

Controls

  • Right Footswitch: Engages or bypasses the effect.
  • Left Footswitch: Selects between Channel 1 and Channel 2. The required channel can also be preselected while the pedal is bypassed.
  • Gain 1 and Gain 2: Set the amount of overdrive independently for each channel, covering cleaner boost settings through to fuller mid-gain drive.
  • Level 1 and Level 2: Adjust the output volume of each channel for unity gain, volume matching or a deliberate boost.
  • Volt: Adjusts the circuit’s internal operating voltage from approximately 6 to 18 volts. Lower settings provide more compression and earlier break-up, while higher settings increase headroom, tighten the bass and add punch.
  • Feed: Controls the amount of low-frequency content entering the gain stage, helping fuller pickups and bass instruments remain tight and defined.
  • Body: Adds bass and low mids while changing the thickness and gain character of the overdrive.
  • Tone: Adjusts treble and upper-mid content, moving from a smoother, darker response to a brighter and more present sound.
  • Input: Three-position switch that changes the sensitivity of the first gain stage. Settings provide normal, low-gain and top-boost responses.
  • Mids: Three-position switch that changes the frequency range affected by the Tone control, helping the pedal match different instruments and amplifiers.
  • Internal Presence Trimmer: Provides additional adjustment of the upper-frequency response.
