Description

The Supercool Pedals Barstow Bat is a RAT-inspired distortion pedal that expands on the classic formula with greater tonal control and output. Designed for guitar and bass, it covers everything from low-gain edge and gritty overdrive to thick, saturated distortion and powerful boost tones. Whether used as a primary dirt sound, a studio tone-shaper, or a gain stage to push an already driven amplifier, it fits comfortably into a wide range of rigs and musical styles including rock, punk, indie, metal and experimental textures.

At its core, the Supercool Pedals Barstow Bat retains the unmistakable bite and grain of a traditional RAT-style circuit, delivering focused distortion with plenty of sustain and harmonic detail. It can produce tight, cutting rhythm tones, snarling lead sounds and fuzzy, lo-fi textures when pushed. With twice the available output of many vintage examples, it is equally effective at driving the front end of a valve amplifier or stacking into other pedals. Backing off the Drive control transforms it into a dynamic dirty boost, tightening low end and adding presence without overwhelming the original character of the instrument.

The feel is immediate and responsive, reacting well to pick attack and guitar volume adjustments. It retains clarity even at higher gain settings, making it usable across a variety of amplifiers, from clean American-style platforms to mid-forward British designs. Bass players will appreciate the extended EQ flexibility, allowing the low end to remain full and controlled rather than collapsing under heavy distortion.

Instead of the traditional single Filter control, the Supercool Pedals Barstow Bat features an active three-band EQ with dedicated Low, Mid and High controls. Set at noon, the pedal delivers a familiar stock RAT-style voice. From there, players can sculpt tones precisely: scooping mids for modern crunch, boosting them for punchy leads, trimming or enhancing treble bite, or reinforcing low frequencies for weight and depth. The EQ is voiced to remain musical throughout its range, offering both subtle refinement and dramatic shifts without becoming harsh or unusable.

The clipping section provides two distinct voices. With the Turbo button disengaged (out position), a pair of silicon diodes delivers maximum saturation and traditional RAT-style compression. Engaging the Turbo mode (button in) switches to LED clipping, reducing compression and increasing output, midrange presence and perceived gain, similar in spirit to a Turbo RAT. This setting is particularly effective for pushing amplifiers harder or cutting through a dense mix with added authority.

Built around a fully analogue distortion circuit, the Supercool Pedals Barstow Bat focuses on reliability and practical performance rather than unnecessary complexity. The all-metal enclosure is robust enough for regular gigging, while the layout remains straightforward and intuitive. The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-inspired Bat Country artwork gives the pedal a distinctive identity without compromising clarity; control labels are easy to read under stage lighting.

A bright LED indicator clearly shows when the pedal is engaged, helping avoid confusion on darker stages. True bypass switching preserves the integrity of the dry signal when the effect is off, ensuring it integrates cleanly into larger pedalboards. The Turbo switch is mounted on the top surface for easy access during performance, and standard side-mounted jack and power connections allow straightforward pedalboard placement.

Backed by the manufacturer’s warranty, the Supercool Pedals Barstow Bat offers the familiar aggression of a RAT-style distortion with significantly expanded tone shaping and output flexibility. For players who love classic hard-clipping drive but want more control and range, it delivers a broader palette without losing the raw character that made the original circuit a staple.

Controls

  • DRIVE: Sets distortion level from light grit to heavy saturation and fuzz-like textures
  • LEVEL: Controls overall output with ample volume for boosting amplifiers or pedals
  • LOW: Active bass control boosting or cutting low frequencies for weight or tightness
  • MID: Active midrange shaping from scooped crunch to focused, cutting lead tones
  • HIGH: Active treble control for added bite or smoother, rolled-off top end
  • TURBO SWITCH: Selects silicon clipping out or louder, mid-forward LED Turbo mode

Components and Technical Specification

  • RAT-inspired hard-clipping analogue distortion circuit
  • Active three-band EQ replacing traditional single Filter control
  • Switchable silicon and LED clipping modes
  • High output design capable of significant amplifier boost
  • True bypass footswitching for signal integrity
  • Standard 1/4 inch mono input and output jacks
  • Top-mounted Turbo push button for clipping selection
  • Designed for guitar, bass and line-level instrument signals
  • Powered by standard 9V centre negative supply (not included)
  • Battery operation not supported
  • Current draw measured with Truetone 1Spot mA Meter:
