CopperSound Pedals Launch ION PLL-Style Laser Fuzz

CopperSound Pedals Launch ION PLL-Style Laser Fuzz

CopperSound Pedals introduce the ION, a PLL-style laser fuzz designed to produce aggressive harmonic sweeps and synth-like textures. The new pedal explores the intersection between traditional fuzz tones and frequency-tracking effects.

CopperSound Pedals have introduced the ION, a new fuzz pedal built around PLL-style frequency tracking to generate dramatic harmonic sweeps and synthesiser-like textures from a standard guitar signal. Designed as an experimental fuzz voice rather than a traditional vintage circuit recreation, the ION focuses on reactive pitch-tracking behaviour and expressive interaction with the player’s picking dynamics.

Based in Massachusetts, USA, CopperSound Pedals have established a reputation for imaginative boutique effects that combine classic analogue foundations with more experimental ideas. Since launching in 2014, the company has gained attention among tone-focused players for distinctive designs and collaborations within the wider guitar community.

The ION centres on a PLL (phase-locked loop) fuzz architecture, producing what the company describes as “laser-style” fuzz textures. In practice, this means the pedal can generate sharp harmonic overtones, reactive pitch sweeps and unusual synth-like artefacts depending on playing dynamics and note tracking. Rather than behaving like a conventional saturation stage, the circuit reacts to the incoming signal and transforms it into shifting, sometimes unpredictable harmonic structures.

Within a guitar rig, the ION will typically sit early in the signal chain where it can respond directly to pickup output and picking attack. Players exploring experimental fuzz sounds may use it to introduce dramatic harmonic movement before modulation, delay or ambience pedals, allowing those later effects to capture and expand the shifting textures produced by the circuit. The result can move from abrasive fuzz tones to oscillating, almost synthesiser-like responses depending on settings and playing style.

From FX Pedal Planet Online Store's perspective, the ION is interesting because it approaches fuzz from a different angle. Rather than revisiting classic circuits, CopperSound have focused on frequency-tracking behaviour that encourages experimentation. For players building creative pedalboards or exploring more unconventional textures in studio or live environments, a PLL-driven fuzz like this offers a very different palette from traditional transistor-based fuzz designs.

FX Pedal Planet would like to thank CopperSound Pedals for their continued support and for introducing this distinctive new design to the guitar effects community. We wish them every success with the launch of the ION and encourage players to explore their work and follow their channels for updates on future releases.

The CopperSound Pedals ION is available for pre-order now at FX Pedal Planet Online Store, with stock expected very soon. Readers who would like to learn more about the pedal or explore additional boutique effects are invited to visit the FX Pedal Planet website for further information.
